How Long Does a VA Claim Take? The Real Timeline

“How long is this going to take?” is one of the first questions every veteran asks — and one of the most frustrating, because the honest answer is: it depends. But the process follows predictable stages, and understanding them tells you where your claim is and what is coming next.

The stages of a VA claim

  • Intent to file. Filing an intent to file can protect your effective date while you prepare — an important early step.
  • Claim received and reviewed. The VA confirms your claim and begins gathering evidence.
  • Evidence gathering. The VA requests records and may schedule exams. This is usually the longest phase, and the one you can most influence by submitting a complete package up front.
  • C&P exam. A compensation and pension exam assesses your condition and its severity.
  • Rating decision. A rater reviews everything and assigns a decision and percentage.
  • Notification. You receive your decision letter explaining the outcome and your rating.

What speeds it up or slows it down

A complete, well-organized claim with the nexus and severity evidence already attached moves faster than one the VA has to chase records for. Missing evidence, missed exams, and large backlogs slow things down. For current average processing times, check VA.gov — the VA publishes them and they shift over time.

Your effective date protects you

Here is the reassuring part: even when the wait is long, your back pay generally runs from your effective date (often your intent-to-file or claim date). A long timeline does not erase the months you waited — which is exactly why filing early and correctly matters.
